What Is Roof Flashing?


Roof flashing is a thin, durable material that is installed in areas where the roof meets another surface, changes direction, or has an opening.


These areas are especially vulnerable to leaks because they create joints, corners, gaps, and transitions where water can try to sneak in.


Flashing helps direct water away from those vulnerable spots and back onto the roof surface, where it can safely flow down into the gutter system.


You will commonly find flashing around:

It is installed in individual pieces, usually layered with each row of shingles. This creates a “stepped” pattern that helps guide water down the roof while protecting the wall connection.


This is especially important because roof-to-wall areas can be very prone to leaks when they are not properly flashed.


Counter Flashing


Counter flashing is often used with masonry, such as brick chimneys.

It helps cover and protect the top edge of the base flashing. This extra layer helps keep water from getting behind the flashing system.


Roof-to-Wall Flashing


Any place where a roof slopes into a wall needs careful attention. Without proper flashing, water can run down the wall and find its way behind the shingles or into the structure.


Roof-to-wall flashing is designed to protect that connection and keep water moving in the right direction.
