What’s Under Your Shingles Matters: A Bedford Roof Replacement

When most homeowners think about replacing a roof, they picture shingles.

But the shingles are only the outermost layer of a much larger roofing system. What’s underneath them can be just as important — and sometimes, once the old roof comes off, that’s where the real work begins.

On this recent roofing project in Bedford, Ohio, our crew discovered areas of roof decking that needed to be removed and replaced before the new roofing system could be installed.

What Is Roof Decking?

Roof decking, sometimes called roof sheathing, is the solid layer attached directly to the roof framing. Your underlayment and shingles are installed over top of it.

In other words, the decking provides the foundation for the roofing materials above it.

When decking becomes damaged, weakened, rotted, or otherwise compromised, simply installing new shingles over it doesn’t fix the underlying problem.

Why Damaged Decking Shouldn’t Be Covered Up

A new roof can look perfect from the ground while still having problems underneath.

Damaged decking can create issues such as:

  • Soft or weak areas in the roof

  • Difficulty properly fastening new shingles

  • Uneven sections of roofing

  • Continued moisture problems

  • Premature deterioration of the new roofing system

That’s why our Bedford project required more than a basic tear-off and replacement.

Once the existing materials were removed and the condition of the roof deck could be fully evaluated, the damaged sections were taken out and replaced with new decking.

Building the Roof Back From the Structure Up

After the necessary decking repairs were completed, the crew could begin installing the new roofing system.

Protective underlayment was installed over the roof deck before the new Owens Corning shingles went down.

The finished roof looks great, but the most important work may actually be the part homeowners will never see again.

That new decking created a solid foundation for everything installed above it.

Why a Roof Replacement Is More Than New Shingles

One of the biggest mistakes that can be made during a roof replacement is focusing only on what the finished roof looks like.

At Synergy Roofing & Construction LLC, we believe in looking at the entire roofing system.

If we uncover a problem during a tear-off, we want to address it properly before covering the roof back up. Installing beautiful new shingles over damaged materials underneath simply isn’t the kind of work we want our name attached to.

This Bedford home now has more than a fresh new appearance — it has a roofing system rebuilt on a solid foundation and designed to protect the home for years to come.

Need a Roof Inspection or Replacement?

If you’re concerned about the condition of your roof, noticing leaks, seeing aging shingles, or simply aren’t sure what may be happening underneath the surface, Synergy Roofing & Construction can help.

We’ll take the time to evaluate the roof, explain what we find, and help you understand what your home actually needs.
